Ditty about our City…

 

 

 

The City of Ellsworth was founded in the fall of 1884.  It came into existence as a direct result of the building of the Burlington Railroad through this part of the country.

 

 

 

The City received its name in honor of Eugene Ellsworth, one of the stockholders and directors of the Burlington Railroad. 

 

 

 

Ellsworth resides in Grand Prairie Township. Grand Prairie Township is so named due to the beautiful lay of the land.                              

 

Grand Prairie Township was established in October of 1873.     

 

 

Currently the census of Ellsworth is 497 residents.   Ellsworth is a farming community with diligent, honest people.                    

 

 

 

 

 

Ellsworth is located in the very southwest corner of the State of Minnesota with surrounding borders of Iowa (1 mile from Ellsworth), and South Dakota (about 25 miles away).

 

 

 

The City of Ellsworth is one of 854 cities in Minnesota.  Ellsworth is classified as a Fourth Class city which means that it has less than 10,000 residents.

 

 

 

Ellsworth is also a statutory city which abides by the Minnesota State Statutes.   

 

 

 

Walking the halls of the Ellsworth Public School you will find 145 students which range in the grades of kindergarten through the twelfth grade.

 

 

In addition, 16 Pre-School Children. 

 

 It also boast being the Class A Boy’s Basketball Champions of 2007 & 2008 with runner up in 2003 &2006, 2009 and third place in 2010.

 

 

 

Businesses include a Meat Market, Elevator, Grocery Store, Implement Shop, Lumber Mart, Vet Clinic, Liquor Store/Restaurant, Cafe, Car Wash, Auto Collision, Beauty Salon, Cabinet Shop, Nursing Home, Plumbing & Heating, Trucking, Gas Cardtroll, Implement Dealership, and Occasional Stores. 

 

 

 

Clubs within the city are the Ellsworth Community Club, Auxiliary, Legion, Saddle Club/Trail Riding Club, 4 -H Clubs, Sportsman’s Club, and Volunteer Fire Department.

 

 

 

Zion Presbyterian Church and the Trinity Temple Church (former St. Mary's) are located in the city with Bethel Reformed located just outside of the city.

 

 

 

 

The City of Ellsworth holds a celebration called “Ellsworth Family Fun Days”.  This is held in June.  Features at the celebration include a Parade, Carnival and Games, Kickball Tournament, Craft Sale and other attractions.  We are all very proud of this community and the heritage that has been set forth.
